It ruled Malaysia uninterruptedly since the country’s independence from Britain in August 1957. But BARISAN NASIONAL’s 61-year grip on power came to an end in May 2018. Less than two years later, the once powerful coalition found itself back in the government. This time as part of the new governing coalition known as Perikatan Nasional. But trouble has been brewing between the two key component parties within the government – UMNO, the lynchpin of the former ruling coalition and BERSATU, the party led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
